AHH! THE JUNK DRAWER!
it wasn’t even a junk drawer. it is my only drawer in the kitchen (well, i have two others, but they’re deep ones for pots and pans). so this is where EVERYTHING lived. my cooking and serving utensils, silverware, baking materials, alcohol opening materials, ice cream scoops, meat thermometers…everything. i was always digging around for what i wanted and, invariably, i would get stabbed by something else in the process. as an already accident-prone individual, i want to avoid regular injuries like that as often as i can.
enter this $28.95 adjustable bamboo drawer organizer— sustainable! eco-friendly! sexy to boot! it was a bit on the pricey side, but i knew i’d be able to reuse it forever, regardless of where i go next, since it’s adjustable and hard-wearing.
i did some paring down of the contents of this drawer as well. some of the cooking utensils are no-nos— since i use nonstick pans, any utensils that could scratch the teflon coating, thus giving me cancer, needed to go. things i hardly use at all went into a cheap ikea canister that i already had in an upper cabinet, where they can’t bother (or stab) anyone. my forks and spoons are now piled by size, and everything else is visible, organized, and within easy reach. baking materials are in the compartment furthes to the back, and wine opening and closing instruments are in the next compartment forward. miscellaneous items go in the long section in the left, and silverware (including chopsticks!) fill up the rest.
